Sightseeing Day 1

Our day began with a drive into New Delhi, where we began our sightseeing at Qutub Minar.

The Qutub complex is a whole series of towers, mosques, and other buildings built in the 1100s and 1200s, surrounded by gardens.

The tallest tower of the complex, Qutub Minar is about 250 feet tall.

It's a pity it was pouring rain and we basically had to run from one arch to another. Oh well, it wouldn't be monsoon season without a little rain!

The rain stopped right as we got into the car and we continued on to the Baha'i Lotus Temple. By far the least impressive of the sights, in my opinion. It was built in 1986 (boring!) and is designed to be a place of worship for all people - regardless of religion, race, etc. It has 27 petals and is made from concrete.

We then continued on to Humayun's Tomb, which is considered to be the predecessor of the Taj Mahal. Humayun was a Mughal emperor, and the tomb was built by his wife after he died in the 1500s. Other important people are buried in the marble tombs surrounding his grave, such as his favorite barber. You know you really made it in life when a massive tomb of marble is built for you and hundreds of years later admission is charged for people to see it - especially if you are a barber.

So, after a long day of sightseeing we stopped by the local "mall" to search out some much needed caffeine. Miraculously, there was a coffee shop and we were lounging on the chairs when we look up and see every other mall patron leaning over the railings staring down at us. They stayed there for the whole half hour we sat there. However, we were distracted by the sound of zapping flies and the smoke that kept rising from the machines placed all around the shop, labeled ELECTRIC FLY KILLER.

All in all, a typical day of avoiding stares and flies.
